Road Regrets

I'm very, very jealous that Mr. Jonathan Taggart gets to tag along on a short jaunt out to the Praries and back with Dan Mangan and Aidan Knight. Logistics and van-space left me in Vancouver instead of on the Zolas/We Are The City tour, so I'm even more jealous.

Anyways, Jon's going to be photo blogging along the way: http://jonathantaggart.com/blog/?p=255 and it will be co-posted on regulars VIA!, NXEW and Soundproof.

If you mosey over to Dan's website right now, you'll see this post about his performance in Los Angeles with my photo from Junofest:

IONmakeouts

Found this when I was going through my ION/BENCH photos:

Reminds me of one that Jon took at ION's last party:

Halloween

I very much enjoy having the creative-obscure halloween costumes that only some people get and many people don't...because the people that get those costumes LOVE them, and the reaction is worth the effort.
That said I give you Sweetlime from the Darjeeling Ltd. (and Jack Whitman...and Francis Whitman)(and the rest of the gang):

(These were shot on Jon's G9 and processed to look like Polaroids!)

Vancouver IS Awesome... still.

So many good things happening right now...and I'm exhausted.

I have officially started contributing to Vancouver Is Awesome. I have a little picture on the contributors list and everything.
My first post came from photos that Jon sent me of a beaver lodge in Charleson Park by the seawall in False Creek.
You can check out my post here!

The September Issue...

Okay, photos from Ontario finally all sorted out.
Most of them are of my parent's new puppy "Dexter", but there were some other good ones from camping too... The award for No-Makeup-Frizzy-Camping-Hair Photo 2009 goes to:

I'm waiting on some PDF's to put up from Vancouver Magazine and catching up on emails still. It's cold in Vancouver, but I still feel like I need to finally start my personal project...hmm.
I've said that before, but I'll try my hardest.
Here's my puppy standing in for a test shot while I did headshots for MBC Financial in Port Colborne:

Vancouver IS Awesome..

I swear this is the last of the Dan stuff...mainly because I have nothing left, and I'm in Ontario currently and Dan is not.

A very wonderful website called: Vancouver Is Awesome came to my attention not too long ago, and I got in touch with them about Dan's CD release show, and suggested they do a Vancouver's Most Awesome questionnaire with him...

They did - so click here to read it.
It features portraits of Dan taken by Jonathan Taggart and one of my shots from the Zulu show.

Soundproof: Warped Tour '09 - Vancouver

For our first Soundproof Magazine assignment ever, courtesy of Ms. Carmen Cheung, Jon and I were sent out to shoot Warped Tour at Thunderbird Stadium.

Highlight of the day was seeing Shad again, followed closely by alexisonfire. I haven't shot an aof show since the last time I was at the SCENE festival in St. Catharines...which may be up to 5 years ago! Oh reliving my youth.

Now that I know what photos they're using I can post a few more of my own...but for now:

Here's the link to the slideshow!

Floating Just Offshore...on English Bay

The initial plan for the day was The Beach, to get relief from the heat...but when an invite comes along to float on/jump off/swim around/bbq & drink on a BOAT in English Bay, you drop everything and go...

Here are some photos I took with my cell phone... Yup. That was the only one I brought with me. (We managed to get 4 musicians, 2 photographers, an actress and a tv guy on the boat.):

Salt & Earth

So my time in Toronto came to an end...and I'm back in rainy Vancouver once again.

I'm very excited because a few opportunities and projects have come up from this trip. One quite random, while the other was conceived without my knowledge, sprung upon me and then kicked into high gear over brunch and beers at the Rex.
More on both at a later date, but rest assured, I am... to use a west coast term... stoked.

Here is a screen shot from Jon's website showing a stitch that I shot and put together of his work up in the gallery (no credit? shame.) after roughly 10 hours of installing it the night before:

I have dark circles and bags under my eyes from spending 75% of my time in Toronto working on the show. But I am EXTREMELY pleased at how it turned out and hopefully Jon will sell some work and get some buzz.
And just wait until you see the time lapse that I took of the opening...it's a Where's Waldo of the guests/the photography world, including cameos by Bruno Barbey and Stephen Bulger. In fact I got to speak (in French, thats right...thank you Mme. Buckner) to Bruno and he said that he really enjoyed the variation in size of the photos and particularly liked the one of the tractor.

Here are a few shots from the week/opening:
Printing at Pikto in the dark with Jon for 4 hours. Mill St. was needed post-production.

Day two of Framing. We're hiding our dark circles/bags.

Devin Jeffrey. Lightmaster.

After party at the wonderful Rasputin Vodka Bar (they made a green martini and called it Salt & Earth). This is Jon and Sas having the Vodka Taster.

If you are trying to CONTACT me...

I'm in Toronto!

Actually, I got a here a few days ago, and I'm trying to adjust my internal clock (got UP at 9am EST, so that may be accomplished) and not have panic attacks about the exhibition...

Currently my main focus while here is organizing the opening of Jon's show at the Ryerson Gallery. So far so good. And it's gained quite a bit of attention. The exhibition is featured in CONTACT, it is in MAG (Mass Art Guide) Magazine and just the other day it was pointed out to us that it is one of Toronto Life's picks for 50 Best Bets for the festival...nicely located as first on the list.
See?:

Today is printing day and some more planning for next week.

Oh! I'm on twitter. do you care? http://www.twitter.com/christinemcavoy
Sometimes I'm interesting...you know...when I do stuff.

Northern Salmon Keep It Real

...as Mr. Knight says.

During my Victoria trip, I went with Jon, his brother and his mom to Goldstream Park. The park has a stream that salmon spawn in, and then die. It was one of the weirdest sights I have ever seen. Hundreds and hundreds of salmon floating in the stream...lying on the shore...
Here, look for yourself (though you will not have the same effect as seeing it in person and smelling the smell!):

Dude, Minnows

So Jon finally had a day off from working on the tugboats (check out his blog on his website for some awesome photos: Click for his website.) so we spent some time shopping, walking and visiting his family again. After I Love Hats, on Broadway, the Rip Curl Outlet Store, Blue Parrot and the Granville Island Brewery...we went to take the twins fishing on the docks!
Here are a couple photos from the afternoon:

Schmoozing...

After weeks of packing and then a trip to Port Colborne (photos eventually, when I can finally scan the 120mm film that I shot white there) Jon and I made our way back to Toronto. For almost a week now we've been camping out in our friend Robyn McCallum's couch/futon. Jon's just finished the Magnum Workshop for the CONTACT festival and we went out to the exhibition opening at 80 Spadina.

(Jon and Dom's names were missing from the list and I was instructed by Emily and Larry to put them up with labels, so I did)

After hanging out with Larry Towell for a few hours, we went home got pizza and then went over to Sarah & Kaja's house for a bit...after which we raided Sobey's for breakfast foods, ate them and crashed.

Now we get to relax for FIVE whole days and then at 7am it's off to Vancouver finally.
